Past Featured Visual Artist

Miriam Körner, originally from Germany, fell in love with Northern Saskatchewan, sled dogs and Quincy 17 years ago. She is a writer, children’s book illustrator and photographer and lives with her husband and their 16 sled dogs at Potato Lake. Her art is inspired by Canada’s vast wilderness and the people who make it their home. She loves to spend time out in the bush and listen to stories of what life was like when our Elders were young.

She is the author of the award-winning novel Yellow Dog, the recently released novel Qaqavii and co-author and illustrator of When the Trees Crackle with Cold: pīsimwasinahikan (with Bernice Johnson-Laxdal). The watercolour illustrations from this picture book are currently touring over 20 rural Saskatchewan communities with the OSAC Arts on the Move program. Her most recent picture book, co-authored by late Ida Tremblay, When We Had Sled Dogs: A story from the Trapline – ācimowin ohci wanihkīskanāhk will be released this month.

Miriam enjoys working with watercolour, Acrylic paints, and various print-making methods. She was the Artist/Writer-in-Residence in La Loche/Buffalo Narrows and most recently in La Ronge with the Alex Robertson Public Library. She regularly does school presentations and workshops across the province and has been a volunteer for the La Ronge Arts Council in many capacities for many years.
